Bloemendaal hosted Kampong in what was the first match of the season on Saturday. Having won the toss, Kampong elected to bat. They got off to a solid start with both their openers seeing off the new ball. Some poor running combined with slick work on mid-off by Sanjay brought the breakthrough in the form of a timely runout. Another wicket fell the very next ball thanks to the ball of the day from Paddy, catching the batsman’s edge to have him caught behind for a duck. With successive wickets and some tight bowling at the other end from Mangesh, the momentum swung Bloemendaal’s way. Despite some fireworks from Kampong’s Australian coach, who made a quickfire 50, we were able to restrict them to a respectable 194. Paddy finished with 3/30 off his quota and Mangesh (0/32) and Aldroy (0/37) were tidy, both going for less than 4 runs an over.
The chase got off to a slow start as James and Douwe did their best to see off a strong opening spell from Kampong’s bowlers. When Douwe fell with the score at 13 and James followed him 20 runs later, things began to look shaky. However, a solid all round performance from Aldroy (32) provided the impetus for a match-winning partnership between Dave and the new coach, Ben. As the pair ate away at Kampong’s total a win began to look promising. Dave finally fell for 48, having put on 117 with Ben for the fourth wicket. The nerves were rattled when two more wickets were lost but Paddy and Ben were able to get the job done in the second to last over – Ben finishing on a well-made 60*.
