Welke consequenties heeft COVID-19 voor Cricket Club Bloemendaal?
Vorig jaar rond deze tijd vroegen we ons af of we überhaupt cricket zouden kunnen spelen in 2020. Uiteindelijk hebben we op beide velden meer cricket gespeeld dan dat we in de laatste jaren hebben gedaan. Er was geen stop, zelfs in de normaal wat rustigere maand augustus werd er volop gespeeld door jeugd en seniors.Vanaf mei kon de jeugd aan de slag en langzaamaan volgde ook de seniors. We hebben onze eigen Bloemendaal Premier League – de BPL, geboren zien worden. Dit wordt zeker een jaarlijks terugkerend evenement. Het was een enorm succes en we gaan hier weer mee starten zodra het mag. In juli en augustus speelden we gelukkig ook nog competitie en we genoten in de zon van verschillende avonden social cricket.
Momenteel zijn zowel de jeugd als de seniors weer aan het trainen, allemaal binnen de gestelde regels van het RIVM. We moeten zien hoe lang de beperkingen nog duren, we houden goede hoop. Zodra het weer mag zullen we cricket weer vol oppakken met interne vriendschappelijke wedstrijden en hopelijk ook snel competitie.
De financiële situatie van de club
Zoals te verwachten had Corona ook financiële consequenties voor de club. De inkomsten zijn met een derde gedaald in 2020 vergeleken met 2019. De grootste terugval had te maken met minder baromzet en inkomsten door events. Echter, ik ben blij dat ik u kan laten weten dat we de club goed overeind hebben weten te houden en een goede financiële basis hebben. Dit kon alleen door geen onnodige kosten te maken en natuurlijk door de onvoorwaardelijke steun van onze leden en onze sponsors. 95% van alle leden heeft zonder morren het volledige bedrag van de jaarlijkse contributie betaald. Zo ook onze grootste sponsors, zowel individueel als zakelijk, bleven de club trouw. Ik wil u daar nogmaals heel hartelijk voor danken!
Daarnaast moet ik daarbij natuurlijk ook vermelden dat wij gebruik hebben gemaakt van de overheidsregeling voor compensatie van sportclubs en verlaging van de huur door de gemeente Bloemendaal voor het veld. Het waren bescheiden bedragen maar ook deze hebben positief bijgedragen aan het resultaat.
Ondanks de financiële tegenwind, zijn we blijven investeren in de club. Zeer noodzakelijk waren uiteraard de screens die we vervangen hebben voor nieuwe duurzame zwarte screens. Daarnaast hebben we geïnvesteerd in twee nieuwe bowling machines, één voor de jeugd en één voor de seniors. Ook voor dit jaar staan er weer wat capex projecten op stapel die ook weer vragen om een stukje project management. We melden ons als we hier meer over kunnen vertellen!
Tenslotte
Dit is een speciaal jaar voor de club, waar we eigenlijk vorig jaar ons lustrum 110 jaar bestaan zouden vieren, hopen we dit jaar aandacht te kunnen besteden aan ons 111-jarig bestaan. ‘Nelson on the board’, de club is 111 jaar ‘not out’.
Voor wie niet bekend is met deze uitdrukking, Nelson is een cricket uitdrukking die samenhangt met 111, een getal met mythische, bijgeloof in cricket. De term Nelson wordt benoemd bij een team of individuele speler die 111 scoort of een veelvoud daarvan. Men zegt dat ‘Nelson’ is gelinkt aan Lord Horatio Nelson, de Britse admiraal die aan het roer stond bij de overwinning van de Britse vloot tegen de Franse en Spaanse vloot in 1805 tijdens de ‘Battle of Trafalgar’. Bekend geworden, doordat de strijd hevig werd gestreden, om zijn ‘one eye, one arme and one etcetera’. Niemand weet naar welk lichaamsdeel de ‘one etcetera’ wordt gerefereerd en dit blijft zich herhalen in veel historische en cricket discussies.
Cricket Club Bloemendaal – News from the Treasurer
It has been one year since the world was rocked by corona. Needless to say, we have all been affected in so many ways. As club Treasurer, in times like this, where our members’ health comes first, I am frequently the first point of contact for questions concerning plans for the new season and of course, questions concerning the effect of the Corona virus on our finances.
What were the consequences of COVID-19 for Cricket Club Bloemendaal?
This time last year, we were all worried whether we would be able to play any cricket at all in 2020. As it turned out, we probably played more cricket on both our grounds than we have done for years. There was no let-up in the action, even in the usually quiet period mid-August. From May, we were able to take to the field in various forms. First, the youth and then increasingly, the adults. We witnessed the birth of the inaugural Bloemendaal Premier League - the ‘BPL’. This was a massive success and shall be repeated by popular demand, as soon as it is deemed safe to do so. July and August saw competitive league cricket and enjoyed a series of Social and Village games.
Currently the youth is resuming training outdoors and the seniors in small groups. How long will these restrictions last is a question we, of course, cannot answer. As soon as it is safe to do so, we shall resume cricketing activities, be it, training, internal friendlies, or competitive league cricket.
Club Finances
As you might expect, the financial consequences for the club were far reaching with revenue streams dropping by around a third in 2020 compared to 2019. The largest hit was from reduced bar and event income. Nonetheless, I am pleased to report that the club was able to stay on a sound, financial footing. This was only possible because the club carefully managed discretionary costs, all while retaining the unwavering loyal support of its members and sponsors. 95% of the club’s members uncomplainingly, paid their annual contributions in full. Similarly, all the club’s main sponsors, both individual and corporate, continued to support the club. A big thank you to you all!
It would be remiss of me not to mention that the club also received some, financial relief from the government in the form of a Covid subsidy and reduced ground rent. Although limited, this too, was vitally important to the club.
Last year, despite significant headwinds, we continued to invest in the club’s facilities. Most notably, we replaced the two large screens and invested in new ‘state of the art’ bowling machines. On the near horizon, we have a couple of significant capex projects, some of which, will require careful project management. Stay tuned for more news on these in the near future.

This year is a very special year for the club - it is a Nelson year. The club is 111 years not out!
For those of you that don’t know, Nelson is a special piece of cricketing slang – it denotes ‘111’. a number with almost mythical superstitious cricketing significance. The term Nelson is applied to a team, or an individual, with a score of 111, or multiples thereof. ‘Nelson’ is said to refer to Lord Horatio Nelson, the British Admiral who famously commanded the victorious British fleet against the French and Spanish fleets at the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar. Famously, as a battle-hardened naval veteran, Nelson had ‘one eye, one arm and one etcetera’. To which body part the ‘one etcetera’ refers, continues to be the subject of much historical and cricketing debate.
